Chris Matakas is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school owner, head instructor, as well as an exceptional author of things like jiu-jitsu and philosophy.
Here's a snippet of Professor Chris's bio that could tell you about him a little better than I can:
Chris Matakas received his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt from 4th degree black belt Ricardo Almeida in 2015. Professor Chris was the Head Instructor of Ricardo Almeida Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Newtown, Pa for four years before branching out and bringing world-class Jiu Jitsu to the Burlington Township area.
Though successful in Jiu Jitsu competition and undefeated in Amateur MMA, Chris's main focus is using Jiu Jitsu as a tool for personal development for his students. He has published four books regarding using Jiu Jitsu to train our mind and body to become better versions of ourselves.
One of the ways he got his start in publishing by writing some fantastic blog posts on the Build the Fire blog where he is a co-contributor. He's also written a lot of in-depth jiu-jitsu literature (you can find his books on Amazon here).
Now that he's opened his own school, he's devoted the majority of his blog posts to the Matakas BJJ blog. He's a total wordsmith.
When I visited his school for the first time, I thought it was amazing to see firsthand how he created such a welcoming environment. The muted walls, the potted plants, the student library, the words of wisdom in the locker rooms that'd change on different days; those intricate details, together, are a big part of the energy a newcomer feels walking in for the first time wondering what this jiu-jitsu thing is all about.
It was amazing to have the honor of photographing a busy Saturday to reinforce the academy's vision and brand.
I had a great time photographing as much as I could of this awesome gem of a martial arts academy.
If you're looking for a world class jiu jitsu school in the Florence/Burlington, New Jersey area, don't hesitate to give these guys a try.
